Luttig Leaves

All you Supreme Court clerk wannabees should don a black armband today, as the #1 feeder judge, Michael Luttig, has just resigned from the judiciary to become the general council to Boeing. Though primarily citing financial concerns, one must believe that Luttig became skeptical that he would ever ascend to the Supreme Court after being passed over twice by Bush earlier this year. As the Paddle pointed out to me earlier, I'm sure the lucky 3L's who thought they were heading to clerk for Luttig next year are not having a very good day.

What?!?!? No more Luttigators? Where will all the top gunners go to join the elect? Does this leave Kozinski the top-dog?

Also, I can't help but wonder if this was something he had planned all along, or if it is in response to being snubbed in favor of Alito as the Harriet stand-in? I'm guessing it is sour grapes...

I think you're right Bubba, but one has to believe that it became hard for him to stomach the fact that 1st year associates at DC law firms made more money than he did. I personally believe that judicial salaries are too low & this will drive many more talented individuals from public service.

As to your question about who is the new # 1 feeder, please see below (though the list is not updated since 2003)

3. Boudin (1st Cir.) (10)
3. Calabresi (2d Cir.) (10)
3. Kozinski (9th Cir.) (10)
6. Edwards (D.C. Cir.) (7)
6. Silberman (D.C. Cir.) (7)
6. Tatel (D.C. Cir.) (7)
9. Williams (D.C. Cir.) (6)
10. Garland (D.C. Cir.) (5)
